Newton Abbott was dispatched this evening for a report of a 2 car accident with entrapment on Abbott Road near Lake Avenue in the Town. Newton Abbott Chief Jensen arrived on location in less than a minute and reported a 2 car head on and requested an additional ambulance along with Rescue 3, Engine 1, and a heavy rescue from Armor due to the extensive extrication and also Mercy Flight with a Windom Engine for a landing zone. Deputy Chief Evaldi arrived on scene with Rescue 3 and quickly assumed Operations. Patient care was started and vehicle stabilization was underway. The crew from Engine 1 stretched a handline for protection and assisted with extrication. The occupant from the smaller vehicle was extricated first and suffered various fractures and was transported by Rural Metro to ECMC. The occupant from the other vehicle was trapped between the dash/steering column and the seat which was forced forward by large debris in the rear of the vehicle. Rescuers used the "Jaws of Life" from both rescue companies to remove both doors, the roof and to displace the dash and steering column. The occupant appeared to be suffering from head and chest trauma and was in and out of consciousness. The occupant was airlifted by Mercy Flight to ECMC. Crews remained on scene to assist the Police with the accident investigation. Job well done to the crews on scene.
