HAMBURG, NY---
Newton Abbott was requested for FAST/RIT early this afternoon in response to a reported structure fire.
Rescue 3 arrived on location with the Armor Chief, who was in command, and an engine from Scranton. Heavy fire was visible on the #3 (rear) side of the 1 1/2 story house, originating in an attached garage, with obvious extension into the first and second floors of the structure. Initially tasked to RIT duties, Newton Abbott was quickly reassigned to engine and truck operations, and a second FAST was called from the Town of Eden.
While Scranton stretched one 1 3/4" hoseline into the first floor to attack the main body of fire, two Newton Abbott firefighters stretched a second line upstairs. Two additional Newton Abbott firefighters moved past the line to perform ventilation and overhaul, pulling down ceiling tiles and discovering heavy fire conditions throughout the common space over the entire second floor. At this point, fire was visible from the exterior of the house, blowing through the roof in various locations, and the decision was made to exit the structure and go to a defensive attack operation. Several large handlines were placed along with the Village of Hamburg's aerial platform, attacking the fire from outside of the building.
The home was unfortunately slated for demolition, but two adults and two dogs escaped the fire. Firefighters were also able to salvage significant personal items.
