General Information Regarding Emergency and Non-Emergency Service in the Town of Hamburg

What phone number should I use when calling to request Police/Fire/EMS?

In the event of an emergency, ALWAYS use 911. For non-emergencies requiring Police in the Town of Hamburg (including the Villages of Hamburg and Blasdell), use (716) 648-5111 extension “0”.

What constitutes an emergency?

When life or property is in imminent danger, it is an emergency. If you have vandalism, a loud music complaint, keys locked in a vehicle (without a child locked inside also), or similar problems, they are non-emergency in nature, and the 648-5111 number should be used.  If a crime is in progress, such as a larceny, domestic incident, assault, or burglary, this is considered an emergency and 911 should be used.  In general, most requests for the Fire Departments or EMS (Emergency Medical Services) in the Town should be requested via 911.

Who do I call for Utility Problems?

If any of your utilities are out, PLEASE do not call 911, or the non-emergency number, to report the problem or request information.  Please call your responsible utility company.  Hamburg Public Safety Communications does not have the reason the utility is down or out and will not know when it will be restored.

What should I expect when calling for assistance?

When you call Town of Hamburg Public Safety Dispatch for assistance, a dispatcher will ask you pertinent questions regarding your problem.  In order to assist the dispatcher with providing the right type of assistance to you, please listen carefully to the questions asked.

These questions will identify:  the address of the problem, the type of problem, when the problem occured, or is it in progress.  You may be asked if there are any "life hazards" or the presence of weapons, physical descriptions of subjects involved, and other pertinent facts.  PLEASE cooperate with the dispatcher, as this will ensure the quickest dispatch of help to your location.

If you are calling for an ambulance, you will be asked scripted questions that are pertinent to your complaint.  Your answers will determine that the correct equipment is dispatched to your emergency. PLEASE understand that while one dispatcher is asking you these questions, the ambulance will be dispatched.

What if I use my cell phone to call 911?

If you use your cellular phone to dial 911, you will be connected with Buffalo 911. You will be asked where the emergency is, and will then be transferred to the Hamburg Public Safety Dispatch Office. Please understand that, due to call volume, you may be put on hold by the Buffalo 911 service.
